But after working with drywall and interior surfaces for many years, we've learned that a great paint job actually starts long before the first coat of paint goes on.

The finished paint job is only as good as the surface underneath it.

Paint can change the colour of a wall and give a room an entirely different feel, but it can't fix poor drywall underneath. It won't make a bad patch disappear, repair a crack, flatten an uneven area or properly fix a damaged corner. In fact, fresh paint can sometimes make those imperfections even more noticeable.

We Look at the Walls Before We Look at the Paint

Most homes have imperfections.

That's completely normal.

Maybe there are a few dents from furniture, some nail holes from pictures, a screw pop in the hallway or a crack that has developed over time. Maybe someone patched the wall years ago and you can still see exactly where the repair was made.

Sometimes it's something larger. There may be damaged drywall, an old water-damaged area that's already been repaired, a corner that's taken a beating over the years or ceiling imperfections that become especially noticeable when the light hits them.

Before we paint, we want to look at those things.

That doesn't mean we're going to tell you that every tiny mark in your home needs an expensive drywall repair.

Far from it.

We'll simply point out what we see and talk about what makes sense to repair before we start painting.

Some things are quick and easy to improve. Other areas may require actual drywall finishing. And there may be little imperfections that you're completely comfortable leaving alone.

It's your home and your budget. Our job is to give you the information and let you decide how far you'd like to go.

Preparation Makes the Difference

It's easy to think that painting is mostly about brushes, rollers and colour.

In reality, a lot of what determines whether a paint job looks professional happens before the paint ever comes out.

The surfaces need to be properly prepared. Repairs need to be completed and sanded. New drywall compound may need to be primed. Surrounding surfaces need to be protected. And we need to make sure we're starting with a surface that's actually ready for paint.

This becomes especially important after drywall repairs.

Fresh drywall compound doesn't behave exactly like an already painted wall. It absorbs paint differently, which is why properly priming repaired areas can be so important. If you skip steps during preparation, you may still be able to put colour on the wall, but that doesn't necessarily mean you're going to be happy with what you see when the light hits it.

We look at painting as a process.

Repair it properly. Prepare it properly. Prime where required. Then paint it.

Each step gives the next one a better chance of looking great.

This Is Where Our Drywall Background Really Helps

One of the biggest differences between Devlin Drywall and a company that only paints is what happens when we find a drywall problem.

Imagine you're having your living room and hallway painted.

There's a crack in the ceiling that's been bothering you for years. There are a couple of screw pops. Someone patched a hole behind the television, but you can still see the outline. And one of the outside corners has been damaged from years of people bumping into it.

We could paint right over all of it.

Your walls would be a beautiful new colour.

But you'd still have the same problems. They'd just be freshly painted problems.

We'd rather talk to you about fixing them first.

Because drywall is what we do, we're able to repair those areas properly before moving into the painting stage. We're not expecting paint to hide something it was never designed to hide.

That's particularly valuable in older homes where walls and ceilings have accumulated years of small repairs, cracks, dents and imperfections.

Sometimes a relatively small amount of drywall preparation before painting can make a surprisingly big difference in how the entire room looks when it's finished.

We Pay Special Attention to Ceilings

Ceilings are one area where our drywall experience can make a particularly big difference.

They're also one of the most unforgiving surfaces in a home.

Natural light coming through a large window or patio door can travel across a ceiling and highlight imperfections that weren't obvious before. Certain types of interior lighting can do the same thing.

If there's an old patch, a poorly finished joint or a damaged area, simply rolling fresh ceiling paint over it may actually make it stand out more.

That's why we look at the ceiling before we paint it.

If it needs a repair, we'll tell you. If an old patch needs some additional finishing, we can take care of it. And if you're dealing with textured ceilings, popcorn removal or a texture repair, those are services our team already specializes in.

That means you don't need to find a drywall contractor to fix the ceiling, a texture contractor to deal with the texture and then a painter to finish everything afterward.

We can take care of the whole process.

One Team From Drywall to Paint

This is probably the part of our painting service that we're most excited about.

On a traditional renovation, the drywall contractor finishes the walls and leaves. Then the painter comes in.

If the painter finds a drywall problem, things can become complicated.

The painter might say the drywaller needs to come back. The drywaller may say it was acceptable when they left. Someone has to make another trip. The schedule changes. And suddenly the homeowner or general contractor is stuck in the middle trying to figure out who is responsible.

Painting Your Home While You Still Live in It

Painting an empty new-construction house and painting someone's home while they're living in it are two very different things.

We understand that we're coming into your home.

Your furniture is there. Your belongings are there. Your family may be coming and going. You might be working from home. You may have children or pets running around.

We want to be respectful of that.

Before painting begins, we'll talk with you about the areas we're working in, what may need to be moved and how we're planning to progress through the home. We'll protect the surrounding areas as required and try to keep the project organized so you know what to expect.

Communication matters to us just as much as workmanship.

If you're going to have a crew working inside your home for several days, you should feel comfortable asking questions and knowing what's happening next.

A professional paint job isn't only about how your home looks after we leave.

Choosing Colours, Paints and Finishes

For some homeowners, choosing the colour is the fun part.

For others, it's the most stressful part of the entire project.

If you already know exactly what you want, that's great. If you're still deciding, that's completely normal too.

There are also practical considerations beyond colour.

A ceiling usually calls for a different finish than a wall. Trim and doors have different requirements again. A busy hallway may benefit from something more durable and washable than a low-traffic bedroom.

Kitchens and bathrooms can also have different requirements than other areas of the home.

We'll help guide you through the practical side of those decisions so you can choose something that both looks good and makes sense for the way you use the space.

You don't need to become a paint expert before calling us.

How Many Coats Will You Need?

This is another question where we prefer not to give every homeowner the exact same answer.

Quite often, two finish coats can give us the result we're looking for. But every situation is different.

If we're going from a very dark colour to something much lighter, additional work may be required. Some strong colours can be more difficult to cover than others. Fresh drywall or repaired areas may require primer. Stains and other existing conditions may need special attention before normal paint is applied.

Instead of promising the same process for every home, we'd rather look at what we're actually working with and explain what we believe will be required.

That way, the quote is based on your home, not a generic painting formula.

Painting After a Renovation

Painting is often the stage where a renovation finally starts feeling finished.

For weeks, you've been looking at framing, drywall, joint compound, sanding and construction.

Then the paint starts going on.

Suddenly it becomes a room again.

Because we provide boarding, finishing and painting, we can take a renovation through those stages without having to hand the project over to another company right before the finish line.

The same applies to many of our ceiling projects.

If we're removing popcorn and creating a new smooth ceiling, we can prime and paint it afterward. If we're repairing and blending texture, we can complete the painting required to finish the repair. If we've boarded and finished a basement or addition, we can continue directly into the painting.

For a homeowner, that can make the project a lot easier.

Instead of hearing, “Our part is finished, now you need to find a painter,” we can keep going until the room is actually finished.
